Pure Triton
Pure Triton
How to build a Triton.
Triumph engine selection
Engine Choice
There has to be only one choice for a Triton, the Triumph Bonneville 650cc.
This engine was manufactured in two forms:
Pre-unit manufactured before 1963, which has a separate engine & gearbox.
Unit construction, manufactured between 1963 & 1970, which has a integrated engine & gearbox, like modern motorcycle engines.
For the purest the combination of a pre-unit Bonneville & a Norton gearbox gives the best performance. However with making any special it is totally up to the builder what he/she wants.
The engine is a dry sump type, so you will have to place a separate oil tank on the bike, normally under the seat.
Performance Improvements
Rubber mount the twin Amal carburetters.
On a unit engine, improve the breathing by removing the engine oil seal on the primary side & drill 3x 3/16” holes in the engine case,
you will have to incorporate a oil catchment tank, I made mine from a Guinness can which the colours match the bike perfectly & to the uninitiated looks like a NOx kit.
Use American valves & springs, Kibblewhite can supply these.
Use 750 camshafts with ‘BSA’ form, making sure that the camfollowers suit.
